Reality and Truth are not the same thing.
Justin or Kelly? Do you remember where you were the night of September 4, 2002? It was a historical moment in American television. Who did you vote for for the very first American Idol? Do you remember who you watched the grand finale with? What a heart gripping event! Real kids with unbelievable talent. Real lives being changed forever. We are all so drawn to tune in and watch reality. Because, well, it’s real. It’s really happening in real life. Wow! Reality TV – What an interesting concept. About 20 years ago, the era of Reality TV began. America watched intently to see which girl the latest famed Bachelor would choose, or which up-and-coming corporate star would be named The Apprentice. And no one had ever imagined the Pop Star Idol craze and success as families gazed at television sets across the nation each week to see if their favorite unknown star would become the next American Idol. While reality shows make for intriguing, must-watch TV, we all know, what we see is only partially true. Reality TV is not the same thing as Truth TV, because Reality and Truth are definitely not the same thing.
I used to believe that Reality was Truth. I thought they were the same. I thought – if it was real, if I could see it, then it was true. But I have learned that everything on earth is a mere shadow (reality) of things to come (truth). (Colossians 2:17)
The apostle Paul talks about this very concept in 2 Corinthians 4:18 –
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen (Reality), but on what is unseen (Truth), since what is seen is temporary (Reality), but what is unseen is eternal (Truth).”
Truth:
In Christ, we are a New Creation. We have a new identity. (2 Corinthians 5:17) We are in union with Him (1 Corinthians 6:17) and we are seated in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6)
Once in Christ, our spirit is one with Him and is seated in heaven now and forever while our minds and hearts are being daily renewed and growing in His truth. Our spirits experience a one time transition – that is the truth of our perpetual and continual state of being in Christ. It is only our minds and hearts that are in a process of learning and growth.
Our spirits were and are forgiven. No forgiveness is left to do. Our spirits were made holy and righteous once for all time. That is who we are every second of every day. It was taken care of once for all time on the cross regardless of our behavior. Our spirits, not our earth suits or our behavior, are our true selves. Our spirits are who we are both now and forever.

Renewing our minds to His Truth
The problem and the reason that we mess up is that we don’t renew our minds to the truth, which is the unseen. The problem is that we focus on the Reality, the seen, the temporal.
Reality:
Focusing on the things that are seen will lead us to believe that:
He is Holy – I mess up
He is perfect – I am blemished
He is beautiful – I am filthy
He is blameless – I am condemned
He is righteous – I am unrighteous
But those statements are not true. Reality is not Truth. Reality is a mere shadow of the Truth. Because of the Finished work of the Cross, I have a new identity. I have His identity.

Now that I know the state of my spirit and I understand the unseen, I now know that these statements are Truth:
He is holy – I am holy
He is perfect – I am perfect
He is beautiful – I am beautiful
He is blameless – I am blameless
He is righteous – I am righteous
That is the Truth of my identity!
That is the Truth of your identity in Christ!
Let us fix our eyes on Truth instead of getting clouded by reality. Let us Rest in the Truth of who we are in Christ, by renewing our minds day by day. We are not defined by our behavior. We have been given a new nature. We are Alive in Christ and in Union With Him.

Because Paul reminds us that we are seated in Heavenly Places (Ephesians 2:6) – let’s just open our eyes to see the Truth of what is unseen. That is who we are. That is Truth.
You, dear friend, are a unique you-expression of Jesus in this world.
As John says in 1 John 4:17,
“As He is, so are we in this world.”
On your journey consider this…
On your journey consider this…
The more we focus on Reality, the further we get from the Truth! But the more we focus on the Truth, the more it becomes our Reality.
BECAUSE OF YOU JESUS
Because of You
I am lifted high
I’m seated in places that heaven lies
Because of You
I am redeemed
I have been washed; made whole and clean
Because of You
I know who I am
I know I’m the righteousness of the Lamb
As I sit and rest at Your feet
I behold Your beautiful face so sweet
All around me starts to fade, as my soul it’s bare-ness laid
The lies of worry
And of doubt
The need to strive is all pushed out
The truth of Your love
Resting in me
Giving me strength to boldly break free
I am who I am
Because of You
Your dwelling in me, has made me new
When I see the temporal
I will close my eyes
And fix them on You as You’re glorified!
Because of You
I see the unseen
It is eternal; it is now seen!
