Day 2 – Who He Says I Am Series
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: The old has passed away, behold the new has come!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
In Christ –
YOU ARE A NEW CREATION
“Me and fear, we had a thing in 1993. Told me I was wasting time with all the silly dreams.
I dated doubt, she knocked me down every time I tried”
Do these words sound familiar? Maybe not just because they are the opening lines from Andy Grammer’s song JOY, but maybe you’ve also felt similar sentiments in your own life. Have you ever felt like you dated fear, doubt, shame, guilt, or condemnation? I know I have. I like how Andy Grammer uses the picture of a relationship because isn’t it true that we embrace these oppressions as if they should be protected or courted and cared for? It makes me think of how relationships often take on unique names. Immediately, “Bennifer” and “Brangelina” come to mind for me. In a more seriously committed relationship such as marriage, the couple shares the same name. This is proof of how relationships become a part of your identity. Our old selves were in relationship with sin and the behaviors that follow were our identity. But now you have a New Identity. Your Identity is no longer in sin and self, but in Christ. You are NOT your past. NEW – is your Identity. If you have placed your faith in what Christ accomplished for you on the cross, then you are a new creation. The old you was broken. The old you was burdened by sin putting a veil between you and God, but now that you are a new creation in Christ, nothing, absolutely nothing – no principalities, not death, and certainly not your actions, can separate you from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). Your faith in the power of Jesus’ blood covers all of your sin – past, present, (and this part is downright scandalous) even your future sins (Hebrews 10:10). They have all been paid for and you are a new creation. Unlike those old relationships, we are no longer defined or labeled by sin or shame. Your new label is righteous. Your old self was broken, but your new self was bought with a price. That price was the body and blood of Jesus, which was broken for our sin. Once for all time, making our new creation selves whole forevermore. It’s the Great Exchange. Everyday is new and everyday, so are you. Rest in the truth that you have a fresh start today and everyday.
NEW CREATION is your identity!
Daily Reminder
You don’t have to work to be a New Creation, you already are a New Creation because Christ gave you a new identity. His identity. This is who you are because of who He is, not who you have to try to become.
– Religion tells us what to do to become, which equals self reliance – the focus is on self.
– The truth of the Gospel tells us who we are because of who Jesus is and what He did – the focus is on Jesus.
Good News – Our Father in heaven is pleased with you because of what Jesus did – it all hinges on Him not us.
We are in union with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17). When our Daddy in heaven looks at you, He sees Jesus, and He is nothing but pleased. (Matthew 3:17)
Rest in Him today.
Creator God,
Thank You for creating. Thank You for making all things new. Thank You for giving me a fresh start each and every day. Order my steps today, Lord. As I take each one, remind me that Your plan is from this point forward with abundant blessings in store. Thank You Jesus!
