FORGIVEN

Day 14 – Who He Says I Am Series

“All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.”

– Acts 10:43

In Christ –

YOU ARE FORGIVEN

The blood of Jesus has made you blameless in the sight of God forevermore.

“Your many sins have been forgiven.” (Luke 7:48) Has there ever been a more beautiful declaration? Travel with me in your mind’s eye for a moment. The dinner has been planned at the home of a prominent religious leader and a well known and controversial traveling evangelist has been invited.  Seems like the evening will be filled with pleasantries and scholarly theological discussions, but in walks a well known prostitute. She carries a jar of expensive perfume of which everyone knows how this perfume was purchased. You can hear the mumbles of scorn. She takes this ill gotten perfume and proceeds to pour it on the feet of this traveling teacher. Many wonder at this point about this teacher’s level of holiness. For if he is truly holy, he would condemn her immediately and force her and her wretched perfume away from his very presence and from dishonoring this hospitable and highly regarded leader’s home.  But much to everyone’s surprise that’s not at all what this traveling teacher does.  Not even close. No, this traveling teacher takes his host on a hypothetical journey to understand the difference between someone who has been forgiven little and someone who has been forgiven much.  Through word pictures he illustrates the difference between 2 people who each owed a debt of differing amounts. One small and one large.  He then asks the host, if both are forgiven their debts, who would be the most grateful? The host correctly replies that the one forgiven the most is most grateful.  This teacher relates this example to the prostitute that is weeping and washing his feet.  She has been forgiven much, so she loves much, but he who has been forgiven little, loves little.  The truth is that we have all been forgiven much.  It is only the self righteous who pretend that they have been forgiven little.  Oh, that we might come to the foot of the cross today to remember what Jesus did on our behalf…and that while we are there thanking Jesus, may we never look to the right or to the left to see if we’ve been forgiven more or less than someone else.  The fact is that we have all been forgiven much and the awakening of the much that we have been forgiven, empowers us to love much. Not only does it empower us to love Jesus much, but it empowers us to love others much as well. This love is a beautiful response. It’s a fruit of the spirit.  It’s not something we must force or muster, but rather something that results from our resting and basking in His love and forgiveness. Out of His great love and because of who He is, you are loved much and you have been forgiven much.

FORGIVEN – is your Identity!

Daily Reminder

You don’t have to work to be Forgiven, you already are Forgiven because Christ gave you a new identity. His identity. This is who you are because of who He is, not who you have to try to become.

– Religion tells us what to do to become, which equals self reliance – the focus is on self.

– The truth of the Gospel tells us who we are because of who Jesus is and what He did – the focus is on Jesus.

Good News  – Our Father in heaven is pleased with you because of what Jesus did – it all hinges on Him not us.

We are in union with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17). When our Daddy in heaven looks at you, He sees Jesus, and He is nothing but pleased. (Matthew 3:17)

Rest in Him today.

Gracious God,

Thank You for forgiving me. Thank You that Your love is so great and so strong that no matter what I have done in the past or what I will do in the future, Your Grace is greater than all my sin. Please remind me today that in You, there is no condemnation. Thank You Jesus!
