ONE IN SPIRIT

Day 16 – Who He Says I Am Series

“But whoever is united with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.”

– 1 Corinthians 6:17

In Christ –

YOU ARE ONE WITH HIM IN SPIRIT

In highschool, I remember a specific time that I wanted to go to the Friday night football game to be near a certain guy I liked. You know the scenario – I put on my favorite outfit and tried my best to find him and get close to him. I did everything I could to put myself in the position to be around him and talk to him. Throughout much of my Christian life, I thought getting close to God was a similar drill. I thought I had to put on my best behavior and do all the right things so that when I talked to God, He would listen and want to be near me. I wanted desperately to be close to God, but what I didn’t realize was that I already was close. You can’t get any closer than being one – being united. It was a huge paradigm shift for me to realize that something that I had been working for and longing for was already given to me through the Grace and power of Jesus. I was and will always be One in Spirit with Jesus. I am in union with Him and He is in union with me. This is truly the reason we practice communion. It’s a reminder as we ingest the “body” and the “blood” that He lives within us. As a follower of Christ, He dwells on the inside. He lives His life through us. Once I recognized that – the shift from trying to get close, to understanding that I am close not from what I do but because of what He did, I was able to rest in His love instead of trying to earn it. Resting instead of working changes everything – how you view yourself, how you view others, how you view God. Resting is where God wants you to be. Confidently knowing who you are in Him. It’s from that place that you are whole and effective. Rest in His finished work today and recognize that you don’t have to work to get close to God. Immanuel came close to you and because of His love, you are one. Next time you participate in the sacrament of communion, remember that you are already close. It’s not the act of communion or any other act (prayer, diligent Bible reading) that makes you close. It’s Jesus. It’s who He is and what He did that makes you one with Him forever. Because of His finished work on the Cross and your faith in Him, you are made one in spirit! You are in union with Christ which means you are always close to God. You don’t have to do anything to get closer, and nothing you do can separate you from His love. (Romans 8:39)

ONE IN SPIRIT – is your Identity!

Daily Reminder

You don’t have to work to be One In Spirit, you already are One In Spirit because Christ gave you a new identity. His identity. This is who you are because of who He is, not who you have to try to become.

– Religion tells us what to do to become, which equals self reliance – the focus is on self.

– The truth of the Gospel tells us who we are because of who Jesus is and what He did – the focus is on Jesus.

Good News  – Our Father in heaven is pleased with you because of what Jesus did – it all hinges on Him not us.

We are in union with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17). When our Daddy in heaven looks at you, He sees Jesus, and He is nothing but pleased. (Matthew 3:17)

Rest in Him today.

Immanuel,

You are the God Who came close. You are with me. You are in me. Nothing I do or don’t do can separate me from You. Even though sometimes I feel closer and other times I feel further away, remind me daily that it’s not my feelings or my actions that determine my union and righteousness – it’s only Jesus. In Him I’m changed forever. Thank You Jesus!
