Day 19 – Who He Says I Am Series
“But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation”
– Colossians 1:22
In Christ –
YOU ARE RECONCILED TO GOD
“God and sinners reconciled.” These are 4 words in a popular Christmas carol that I have sung thousands of times before understanding the gravity of this statement. The New Oxford American Dictionary defines reconcile as a verb meaning “to restore friendly relations between.” By definition, we had friendly relations with God and because of sin, our friendly relations with Him were destroyed. But because of Jesus and His Grace, which is greater than all our sin, our friendly relations have been restored. Once for all time on the cross. Teacher, pastor, professor and linguist, Dr Andrew Farley, explains that before we understand the finished work of the cross we often view God in a swivel chair. I know that I did. I believed that as a Christian, when I was doing things to please God, He would adoringly and lovingly, turn His kind face toward me. Unfortunately however, I had somehow bought into a lie that when I did something wrong (sin) that He disappointedly and angrily turned away from me not wanting anything to do with me until I pleased Him again. Much like the wizard in Oz, I believed I had to jump through hoops and bring the witches broom to keep God’s kind face toward me. What a sad, incorrect, and distorted view of God. Many Christians share these false beliefs that have been put on them by false teachers who teach more about shame and performance than the blood, Grace, and power of Jesus. My friend, if you have bought into this lie that God is mad at you and turns away from you when you mess up and only wants to turn toward you when you act pleasingly, be set free today. In Romans 5:8 the apostle Paul reminds us that God (who is always turned toward us) demonstrates His perfect love for us that while we were still sinners, Christ (in the ultimate act of love, compassion, rescue, grace, mercy, and kindness) died for us. Did you catch that? He performed the most incredible act of love while were were (and are) sinning. When you sin, He doesn’t turn away from you. He is always turned toward you with outstretched loving arms ever ready to embrace, forgive, rescue, deliver, and help. That is our God. Through the blood of Jesus, we have been reconciled at all times. “God and sinners reconciled.” Finished. Complete. Forevermore. What a profound statement of awe and celebration! Let us never sing those words again without understanding their weight – without understanding the full price that Jesus paid for that statement sung in a Christmas carol to be true. Because of Jesus’ finished, completed, and perfect work on the Cross, your standing with God has been permanently restored. Jesus paid for your right standing and gave you His gift of righteousness. In this, you have been given peace with God. God sees you as holy, blameless, and without blemish. You have right standing with God forevermore because of Jesus. Rest in these words today.
RECONCILED TO GOD – is your Identity!
Daily Reminder
You don’t have to work to be Reconciled to God, you already are Reconciled to God because Christ gave you a new identity. His identity. This is who you are because of who He is, not who you have to try to become.
– Religion tells us what to do to become, which equals self reliance – the focus is on self.
– The truth of the Gospel tells us who we are because of who Jesus is and what He did – the focus is on Jesus.
Good News – Our Father in heaven is pleased with you because of what Jesus did – it all hinges on Him not us.
We are in union with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17). When our Daddy in heaven looks at you, He sees Jesus, and He is nothing but pleased. (Matthew 3:17)
Rest in Him today.
Prince of Peace,
I come to You today because I have been fully and completely reconciled. There is therefore now no condemnation because I am in Christ. There is absolutely nothing between us – nothing separating us – not sin or shame. Your love covers all. I will rest in that love today. Thank You Jesus!
