Day 21 – Who He Says I Am Series
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
– Ephesians 2:8-9
In Christ –
YOU ARE SAVED
Those of you who remember 80’s hair bands, puff paint, and tight rolled jeans will also remember “Baby Jessica” – the 1987 news story that gripped the nation. On October 14, 1987, 18 month old Jessica McClure fell into a well in her aunt’s backyard in Midland, TX. For 56 straight hours, dedicated rescue workers attempted to free her from an 8 inch well casing about 22 feet below the surface. The original plan to liberate her from this tiny prison in the ground was to drill a hole parallel to the hole Baby Jessica was stranded in, then to drill a horizontal hole from the vertical one – picture it – the rescue was vertical and horizontal. What does Baby Jessica’s rescue resemble? A cross. A cross was the rescue method used to save Baby Jessica and a Cross was the rescue method used to save you and me. As Baby Jessica was stuck with one leg elevated above her head for over 2 straight days, she couldn’t do anything to save herself. The many rescuers worked tirelessly day and night, around the clock to get her out of the predicament that she found herself in. The rescuers did all the work, while Baby Jessica sang. After 45 hours, the rescue workers completed the cross drills but it took over 10 more hours to get someone to her for the rescue. Once they completed the cross drills, they could hear her. What they heard was not crying or screaming. What they heard was singing. Baby Jessica was singing “Winnie the Pooh.” At only 18 months old, it was as if Baby Jessica knew that there was nothing she could do in her strength and power to rescue herself. So she sang. You and I sing redemption’s song when we realize that there is nothing we did to save ourselves. We were in a predicament of sin and needed a Savior -a Rescuer. He is the One Who did all the tireless work on our behalf. Being saved made us right with God, meaning there is also nothing we can do to maintain that righteousness we received as a free gift. Just like Baby Jessica, you have been rescued. Rescued from your fate. Rescued from darkness. Rescued from a life (both now and eternal) separated from God. How? By Grace through faith. It is a gift. No works or actions on our part could accomplish this. You are saved by the blood of the Lamb. The spotless Lamb has made you spotless in the sight of God – both now and forevermore. Stand tall in the knowledge that you have been rescued and if He rescued you from your old predicament of sin which carried an eternal weight, He will surely continue to rescue you from the temporary predicaments of life. If you are struggling in one now, rest in your rescue. Rest in knowing that your Rescuer lives in you. With His incredible Love, He has declared that you have been saved.
SAVED – is your Identity!
Daily Reminder
You don’t have to work to be Saved, you already are Saved because Christ gave you a new identity. His identity. This is who you are because of who He is, not who you have to try to become.
– Religion tells us what to do to become, which equals self reliance – the focus is on self.
– The truth of the Gospel tells us who we are because of who Jesus is and what He did – the focus is on Jesus.
Good News – Our Father in heaven is pleased with you because of what Jesus did – it all hinges on Him not us.
We are in union with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17). When our Daddy in heaven looks at you, He sees Jesus, and He is nothing but pleased. (Matthew 3:17)
Rest in Him today.
Father God,
Thank You for saving me. I will sing Your praises and recognize that while I was helpless, You rescued me. When I am feeling helpless in any earthly situation, I will fix my eyes on You, my Rescuer. You are always loving me, protecting me, and reaching out for me. Thank You Jesus!
