Day 31 – Who He Says I Am Series
“For the LORD takes delight in His people; He crowns the humble with victory.”
– PSALM 149:4
In Christ –
YOU ARE DELIGHTED IN
Have you ever heard of Angel Pickles? I’m sure you haven’t because “Angel Pickles” became a term coined by my parents to describe whole pickles in a jar. This term came about when I was little. I loved to eat whole pickles (not spears or chips, but whole), so at our house they became affectionately known as “Angel Pickles.” Angel Pickles was how they had been referred to for 25 years when my daughter Madilyn was 3 or 4 years old and she was at my parents house, and my parents pulled out the Angel Pickles and started telling Madi about how Angel Pickles got their name. My 3 or 4 year old Madi decided that she wanted the name changed from Angel Pickles to “Madi Pickles.” My parents thought that was hilarious and like any doting grandparents, of course they obliged. And what’s funnier is when Madi came back home, she was quick to inform me that “Mombo and Poppo” (my parents) had decided to change the name from Angel Pickles to Madi Pickles and she needed to ensure that I fully understood that henceforth, whole pickles were only allowed to be referred to as such. This story has been told and retold since the day of the Great Pickle Name Change in our family. I’m sure you have similar stories that you love in your family. We all delight in our children, regardless of what they do and even because of what they do. Even the mischievous things they do are endearing to us as parents. Thankfully though, our Daddy God’s love for us is even more pure than our love for our kids. It’s even more unconditional. It’s important that we don’t boil God’s love for us down to our human love for our kids, but instead we need to let His limitless love for us inform our love for others. He delights in you no matter what. He delights in you because you are you and He is Him. It’s His love for you that brings the delightment, not what you do. His love and delight for you is based on His character not your actions, and while your actions will fluctuate, His character never will. This means that His love and delight in you won’t fluctuate either. If God had a Facebook account your picture and stories would be all over it, because He delights in you. You are the apple of His eye. While you were deep and dark in your sin, He demonstrated His extravagant love for you. (Romans 5:8) Unconditional love. That love is still unconditional once you believe. His love for you is not based on your behavior. He delights in showing you mercy. (Micah 7:18) Even when we struggle with issues, God sees the end from the beginning. He likes projects. On earth He was a carpenter. Building, strengthening, repairing the worn and weak places. He does that in our lives and when we feel like we should be further along or even sometimes feel that we are going backwards, just remember, He sees you as His finished project. Whole and strong. When we look too long at “the project” and start feeling discouraged, merely take it as a sweet reminder to look at the Perfector instead. He sees His finished work in you and He says it is good. Humility is recognizing that it is His work that finishes our faith. Not our own. (Hebrews 12:2) And in that, we can rest in the victory, He loves to love you.
DELIGHTED IN – is your Identity!
Daily Reminder
You don’t have to work to be Delighted In, you already are Delighted In because Christ gave you a new identity. His identity. This is who you are because of who He is, not who you have to try to become.
– Religion tells us what to do to become, which equals self reliance – the focus is on self.
– The truth of the Gospel tells us who we are because of who Jesus is and what He did – the focus is on Jesus.
Good News – Our Father in heaven is pleased with you because of what Jesus did – it all hinges on Him not us.
We are in union with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17). When our Daddy in heaven looks at you, He sees Jesus, and He is nothing but pleased. (Matthew 3:17)
Rest in Him today
Gracious Father,
Thank You for delighting in me. Many times, I don’t see myself as delightful. Thank You for not changing how You see me based on how I see me. You are El Roi, the God Who sees. You truly see – all other sight is blurred by earthly voices and distractions. Your sight is holy and You delight in what You see in me. Thank You Jesus!
